Counseling Center Programs

Mental Health Counseling

Conveniently located in the Uptown area of Dallas, Legacy Counseling Center provides affordable, quality mental healthcare and emotional support services to hundreds of men and women challenged with HIV or AIDS. The center offers individual, group, and family counseling by fully licensed professionals. The agency also provides a 24-hour emergency hotline available to anyone facing suicidal or other crisis situations related to their diagnosis or current medical condition.

Individual Therapy

Legacy provides one-on-one private therapy sessions with licensed professional counselors who are specially trained in areas specifically related to mental health issues of persons living with HIV and AIDS. Counselors assist clients with a wide range of coping issues from anxiety and depression to survivor guilt and medication compliance.

Group Therapy

Legacy offers group therapy sessions both during the day and evening. These weekly support sessions provide a powerful, enriching experience that help HIV-positive people contend with many unique issues surrounding HIV and AIDS. Groups are comprised of members with similar needs and characteristics. For example, Legacy offers groups specifically for HIV-positive women as well as Spanish-speaking only groups.

HIV-Positive Women’s Groups

Legacy’s HIV-positive women-only groups provide a safe environment for women to discuss their unique issues. Along with The Grace Project, Legacy’s women-oriented programs help women who are affected by HIV and AIDS to cope with this disease.

Spanish Language Therapy

Legacy also provides therapy to Spanish language individuals.

Substance Abuse Program

A specialized practice of the Counseling Center, the Substance Abuse Program provides both intensive and supportive outpatient substance abuse treatments as well as ongoing relapse prevention services for HIV-positive individuals struggling with alcoholism and other chemical dependency issues. The program educates clients about drug abuse and its effect on HIV and AIDS in both group and individual therapeutic sessions.

Nine-Week Intensive Outpatient Program

Our Intensive Outpatient Program is a nine-week, 10-hour per week program that provides recovery support through mandatory three-hour group sessions three times per week combined with one hour of individual counseling sessions per week.

Nine-Week Supportive Outpatient Program

Our Supportive Outpatient Program is a nine-week program that provides group and individual counseling regarding relapse prevention planning, education, and life skills development. Schedules can be individually tailored to meet the clients’ needs. The program includes:Relapse Prevention Planning which helps clients develop the resources needed to remain sober.Recovery Education that gives clients information on the effects of drugs and alcohol on HIV and AIDS.Life Skills Development that provides clients the skills necessary to live a successful, sober life.

Individual Counseling

Similar to Legacy’s HIV and AIDS counseling, one-on-one substance abuse counseling helps people living with HIV cope with their lives and covers a wide range of mental health issues and concerns which affect the client’s psychological well-being and emotional health specifically related to addiction.Legacy offers individual counseling at various time throughout the day and evening and can be scheduled at any time by the client. Legacy also offers bilingual counselors as a part of the Minority Outreach Program. Bi-lingual counselors are available.

Program Requirements

Legacy’s Substance Abuse Program demands three basic requirements of all participants:You must be HIV-positive with a letter of diagnosis.You must be at least 18 years of age.You must remain alcohol and drug-free during the program.
